The best bowling ball on dry lanes depends on how dry the lanes are. I use ball inserts for using my fingertips, and that creates more turn on the ball resulting in more hook. On league oil, my Columbia 300 polyester ball doesn’t hook much at all because it slides on the oil. I use it for making my ten pins.
I don’t have a clue how many games are actually on the Columbia ball, because I use it for making my ten pins. So, it may be only used 2 or 3 times in three games, sometimes more. I have had the ball for 10 years or more. The surface is not completely shiny anymore, and it will hook on dry lanes. so, I know it is not the best bowling ball on dry lanes.
What Is The Best Bowling Ball On Dry Lanes?
The best bowling ball on dry lanes is a ball that hooks less but still has enough power to deliver strikes. This would be the entry level bowling balls. They will work best on medium to dry lanes because the have a low hook rating.
But, this is all relative to you and what your skill level is. The complete beginner may want a straight bowling ball. And is not looking for anything that hooks. His goal is to find out if he even likes the game enough to spend a lot of money on his equipment. In that case, the cheapest ball to buy is the polyester ball with no hooking ability. Let’s take a look at some balls that would please this bowler.
Beginners Best Bowling Ball On Dry Lanes
As I said above, the bowler who is not worried about any hook, doesn’t need a high tech ball. He wants to experiment with the game first, and join a league later on. After bowling awhile, then progress to throwing a hook.
Polyester Balls Are Designed To Go Straight
If you want to throw a straight ball, then the polyester ball is what you want. They don’t hook much at all because they have what is considered a pancake block. This adds some top weight to the ball to offset the loss of weight when holes that are drilled in the ball.
These ball are designed to go straight. That is why people use them for spare shooting, mostly ten pins. This is what my spare ball is, a polyester ball, with a pancake block. That’s great for going straight, but it doesn’t deliver any hook or the hitting power of a full block inside the ball.
The beauty of using the polyester ball for a first ball is the fact of it’s versatility. If you decide that you want to learn to throw a hook, you will need to change to a ball designed to hook. But, you can still use that polyester ball to pick up ten pins!
Urethane Balls are designed to hook With Control
Some urethane balls have a low hook rating and hook only slightly. This makes them a great ball for dry lanes. They give you some ball motion to increase your entry angle. Two handers like urethane balls for the control they bring to their game. The result is a spare ball that works as a strike ball on dry lanes.

Intermediate Bowlers Best Bowling Ball On Dry lanes
The Intermediate bowler has some experience and likely bowls in a league. Maybe he hasn’t been bowling for very long, but he has mastered some of the targeting techniques and knows about making adjustments to improve his scores.
Most intermediate bowlers have recognized the advantage of hook style bowling. They have their balls drilled with a fingertip drill that allows them to hook the ball. This type of bowler would be looking for a low flare ball with a core that will deliver some good pin carry.
Again, this depends on the bowler. If you want a smooth consistent motion, you would like a symmetric core. And if you want more of the “Hockey Stick” reaction, you likely want an asymmetric core.
Symmetrical Balls Create A Smooth Consistent Arc
Unlike the polyester pancake core, these balls have a block inside designed as an engine to help the ball hook. The symmetrical balls will deliver a smooth constant arc, and don’t have a hockey stick reaction on the back end.
Asymmetric Balls Snap Harder On The Back End
While the asymmetric balls will store energy and snap hard on the back end. Dry lanes will exaggerate the back end snap, and make the ball control more challenging. You will need to be adept in moving and changing your line on dry conditions.

But, since we are dealing with dry lanes, intermediate skill bowlers want to be able to control the ball. A lower performance ball is a great tool to have in your arsenal.
Different Coverstocks Produce More Hook
If you have some mastery over hitting your mark and the same line with consistency, you can explore different Coverstocks to improve your scores.
- Polyester Covers – for straight bowlers and spare shooting.
- Urethane Covers – for control with some hook.
- Pearl Covers – for some length with more hook.
- Hybrid Covers – Length with strong hook.
- Solid Covers – Strong overall hook.

Experienced Best Bowling Ball On Dry Lanes
When you reach this level, your best ball on dry lanes is what ever you feel you can handle. It should be a ball you can rely on for consistent reaction and pin carry.
Some lanes will always hook more than others when they are dry, so it is a matter of matching the power of the ball reaction with your bowling style.
You could use any of the balls that I have shown above for the Intermediate players and have great success. or you may like a stronger cover with a symmetric ball, or vice versa. It’s really up to the individual bowler and his style.
My Personal Preference
Personally, I find the high performance balls are normally a bit too much on dry lanes, and I prefer the pearls on dry lanes. They give me more length downlane and save their energy. But, I have had great success with mid-range solid covers, like the Roto Grip Hustle Ink.
The Roto Grip Hustle ink is retired now, but, IMHO a good replacement would be the Hustle PBR or Hustle Wine. That is my opinion, and again just a suggestion. I still say the Roto Grip Hustle line is one of the biggest bang for your buck bowling lines.

What Is Your Best Bowling Ball On Dry lanes?
I have given you some of my ideas and suggestions that I honestly believe will work on dry lanes. Honestly, I have not used all of these balls, but I have based my opinion the experience I have.
Every bowler is different, and styles are different. If you throw a ball hard and fast, you could likely use a stronger hooking ball than the ones I have listed. But, most people would struggle with bowling balls stronger than these. In fact, some of these may be too strong.
I have tried to consider everyone, and now you need to compare the balls, the cores and Coverstocks, and make up your own mind.
Thank you for reading my article. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below. I welcome any suggestions you may have on your best ball on dry lanes.

To keep you ball investment in top condition, you have to keep it clean. Wiping the ball before every pitch with a good clean Microfiber Towel, helps to remove oil and keep the pores open.
Keeping the ball clean, keeps the reaction consistent. After a three game series, the ball should be cleaned with a good ball cleaner. Click here to find all your favorite ball cleaners and polishes.
However, if you bowl 3 or more times a week, you may need some extra help. The pro shop will offer to rejuvenate your ball with a through cleaning for about $25. They do this using either heat or a hot water bath to clean the ball. Now you can do this at home.

Hi Chas,
I can tell that you are experienced in bowling with helpful information. People interested in bowling surely can get value. I am only playing it for fun, so I would consider the polyester balls as you recommend in this article. 🙂
Cheers,
Matt
Hi Matt,
Thank you for the kind words. I have been bowling in leagues for 30 years or more, and bowled in a few tournaments, so I do have some experience with bowling. If you just bowl once in awhile, a polyester ball is economical and the most durable. Higher end balls need replaced more often. So, you could buy one and you can have that ball for life. But, more serious bowlers, buy more expensive balls and replace them every year.

Hello Chas,
I would surely categorize myself in the beginners category as I only played bowling with friends and for fun. It did not even cross my mind that there are different types of balls depending on the experience, preferences and of course dryness of the lanes.
In my understanding the best ball is the one that is able to pick up all my pins 🙂
I think this information is very useful as bowling is such a social activity, bringing people together in a fun and easy for all family type of activity.
Thank you for sharing!
All the best,
Tatiana
Hi Tatiana,
You wouldn’t know that if you don’t own your own ball. The plastic balls(polyester) are the ones you use as house balls when you go bowling once in awhile. If you ever bought your own ball, and joined a bowling league, you would see you scores improve dramatically. Owning a ball drilled specifically for you, makes scoring much easier. Plus, frequent bowling in a weekly league would also help to improve your bowling.

Thank you for this article.
I am a beginner bowler and have been looking a lot on how to start and I am glad that you suggested that plastic balls are vital for beginners which is something I never thought. I honestly though there is no difference but your article explained it well for me.
Hi Thabo,
We were all beginners once, so you have to start somewhere. If you decide to buy your own ball, now you have somewhere to start. There is a huge difference in bowling balls nowadays. Bowling has become high tech like most everything else!
